John Wallace King was born in 1828, in Dunlop, Ayrshire, Scotland.
John married Elizabeth Walker on 30 July 1861, in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland. They had a baby, Jane King, and emigrated with her to New Zealand on the ship Robert Henderson in 1862. This was the first immigrant ship to land at the Bluff.
